Pre - 1977 MOT exemption announced

28th Sep 2017

After 12 months of public consultation the UK’s Department for Transport has announced that most cars built before 1978 will be exempt from the need for an MOT.  The exemption operates on a rolling basis so that every year more vehicles will become exempt as they reach 40years of age.  Owners of pre-1978 vehicles will still be able to voluntarily submit vehicles for an MOT.

Owners of vehicles which have been substantially changed, regardless of their age, may not enjoy this exemption (further guidance as to the meaning of “substantially” will be issued by DfT in due course).  The change will take effect on the 20th May 2018.  Currently only vehicles registered prior to 1960 are exempt.  Official information on this subject can be found at:  www.gov.uk
